About me

Me?

I'm John Halvorsen

BDes (hons)

I have always been interested in art.

Even as a child I would pour over images in books, trying to emulate what I saw with pencil and paper.

So it seemed quite natural that as an adult I should pursue art as a career.

I graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in 1998 with an honours degree in illustration and printmaking. It was there in art college that I realised my burning desire to write and illustrate children's picture books. However, upon graduation, aside from running various art classes within the area & lecturing within an art department at the local college of further education. Which was what I thought I'd be

doing forever more. Life actually

took me on another route and for

the next sixteen years art seemed

to be the last thing I would ever seriously pursue as a career.

It was only in 2015 that I had the opportunity to return to illustration and I'm delighted to say that towards the end of that year I had completed my first book "The Big Brown Lazy Dog" then the following year, 2016 "Run Dog Run."

Since returning to illustration at the start of 2015 I have had quite a steep learning curve.  I have developed skills in marketing my own products, including promotion and distribution along with liaising with book sellers local and further afield.

Thanks to my years within the local authority I was quite comfortable communicating with clients and enjoyed the opportunity to be interviewed both locally on Heartland FM which covered Perthshire two years in a row plus Radio TD1 in the Scottish Borders. It was during this time that exposure through the medium of local newspapers such as The Evening Telegraph, The Courier and The Perthshire Advertiser raised my profile further. One of the spin offs iff you like was that I was invited to attend a number of primary schools throughout Perthshire during World Book Day. Have to say I totally loved the experience and the kids

and staff seemed to enjoy the visits also. It's something I would like to continue and develop further.

Both books are for sale for £5.95 directly from myself or Fun Junction The Toy Shop in Perth.

If you have any questions or would like to commission me. Most subject are covered, whether it be a family member, pet or even your home.

An A4 black and white portrait of your pet onto a good quality watercolour paper, would cost £40.00 plus p&p.
